Se presentan: i.

The excessive use of fossil fuels has caused changes in the atmosphere, raising CO2 levels and distorting the global climate. Several countries have implemented environmental policies and have proposed technological alternatives. However, few have made major changes in their energy matrix. Today, fossil fuels are the main source of energy, due to the lack if implementation of global policies that encourage the use of alternative energies and the lack of technology transfer. As a result, there is a lack of studies that measure the economic-environmental impact of these alternative technologies. Biodigestion is an effective approach that addresses two major problems offering viable solutions: the reduction of fossil energy and the proper treatment of organic waste. In addition, biodigestion can generate tangible benefits (biogas, biofertilizer) as well as intangible benefits (odor management, animal welfare, pest and disease control) through the proper processing of organic waste. The following work focuses on the use of biodigesters for the treatment of livestock waste. The main objective is to provide tools, information and guidance to decision makers to facilitate the implementation of these technologies in small and medium scale livestock systems in Costa Rica. It presents: i. Fundamentals on anaerobic degradation processes; and for four animal farms of different sizes and production systems it presents ii. Calculations for the design of biodigesters, iii. Technologies for the generation and efficient use of biodigestion products, and iv. The technical and financial feasibility of these technologies. The results show that biodigesters are an efficient alternative for the treatment of waste from different livestock systems at different scales. The cost (net present value calculated for a period of 10 years) of the studied conventional systems was between 1.2 and 4.2 times higher than the biodigestion systems, depending on the type and size of the farm and on the purpose of the biodigester. It is recommended that the country’s extension agencies promote and advise more on anaerobic system technologies, especially in livestock systems where thermal use is an efficient alternative for the reduction of LPG and/or electricity, as it is the case in the pig industry.
