Ítem Restringido Apis mellifera habitat preference and swarm relocation to EARTH University´s didactic apiary.(Universidad EARTH, 2020-12) Chitambala, ThonisoThis project was to determine if it is possible to trap A. mellifera swarms in the humid tropics of Costa Rica, as beekeeping is not a common activity in the province of Limón. Three locations (Integrated Organic farm, Academic farm and the Escalera del Mono Forest Reserve) within the EARTH University campus were used as experimental area in order to evaluate the preferability of A. mellifera. Twelve 10-frame Langstroth boxes baited with Lemongrass essential oil and old honeycombs were used as trap boxes. Additionally, the area in which each trap was set was analyzed for melliferous floral and the weather patterns as well as the utilization of pesticides and human activity in the areas were taken into account. Swarms caught were relocated to the EARTH’s Didactic apiary. Seven swarms were collected with three collected from the academic farm and four from the integrated organic farm. However, upon relocation only five swarms successfully adapted to the apiary.
