Ítem Restringido Developing an intergrated pest management manual for some of the important crops in Rwanda.(Universidad EARTH, 2017-12) Mutoni, Maureen; Ndayishimiye, Gerard; Walter, Ndonkeu TitaPests are a major challenge that Rwandan agriculture face, that leads to low production of most of the crops. This is due to lack of adequate knowledge about pest control strategies and how to effectively apply them. On the other hand, proper use of personal protective equipment during agrochemicals handling has been observed to be a challenge among the farmers. This study aims at addressing these problems through a field survey with some of the country farmers and elaboration of a pest control manual for the famers in Rwanda. Firstly, a survey was conducted in Southern, Northern and Eastern provinces of Rwanda with fifty farmers to assess farmers ‘perception and knowledge about methods used to control the major pests of four important crops produced in Rwanda which are; coffee, maize, beans and Irish potatoes. The results indicated that the farmers used different methods to control different pests in their farms and stores. Generally for the pests that affect beans, the majority between 55 % and 90 % of the farmers did not use any method to control bean fly, yellow mosaic virus and bean stem maggot, except for black aphids where 40 % of the famers used chemical method to control this pest. Combination of chemical and cultural method is also used. For potato tuber moth, 50 % of the farmers used cultural method and 40 % did not use any method. For the corn farmers, about 30 % to 70 % used chemical method to control leaf aphids, maize grain weevil, and African maize stem borer in exception of fall armyworm where 60 % of the farmers did not use any control measure and 30 % used cultural methods. In case of coffee, about 50 % to 70 % of the farmers used chemical insecticides to control white coffee stem borer, coffee berry borer and antestia bug, and others used combined method of biological and cultural. On the use of protective equipment when handling agrochemicals, only 4 % of the farmers use incomplete equipment. The information collected, served as basis for the elaboration of the pest control manual, which will be a guide for the farmers to control the above-mentioned pests. The manual is in a simple English for better understanding of farmers.
