Ítem Restringido Elaboration of a pest control manual for some of the economically important food crops in Uganda.(Universidad EARTH, 2016-12) Najjemba, Primrose; Mukuye, Paul; Walter, Ndonkeu TitaPests are a major problem affecting agricultural productivity in Uganda since farmers lack adequate knowledge about pest control strategies and how they can be applied for effective control. On the other hand, there are reports about pesticide residues in water bodies and intoxications among farmers who use pesticides which is a result of improper pesticide handling practices. This study sought to address these challenges through a survey and elaboration of a pest control manual for farmers in Uganda. First, a survey was conducted on forty farmers in both the Western and Central regions of Uganda which aimed at assessing the farmers’ knowledge on biological, cultural and chemical control methods used in insect pest management. The study was made on the key pests of some economically important crops in Uganda which include coffee, banana, beans, maize, beans, sweet potato and potatoes. Results from some of the key pests studied from farmers who had knowledge about them in both regions show that cultural and chemical control methods are the commonly used with little application of biological control methods. For some of the pests evaluated for example banana weevil, 30 % of the farmers in the Western region use cultural control methods as opposed to only 15 % in the Central region. Farmers using chemical and cultural control for this are represented by 40 % in the Western region and 20 % in the Central region, those using cultural and biological control are represented by only the farmers in the Western region with 5 % and those using chemical, biological and cultural control are also represented by 5 % of the farmers in only the Central region. The knowledge about correct pesticide dosage to apply in a pest-infested field is limited among the farmers who use chemical control. A pest control manual was elaborated with the aim of providing practical guidance to farmers on different pest control methods, calibration of a knapsack sprayer and the proper use of personal protective equipment when handling pesticides.
