Ítem Restringido Analysis of comprehensive family farm pig production in Kyerwa District, Kagera, Tanzania(Universidad EARTH, 2016-12) Sylyvester, Eunice; Castellón Mora, RogerThe purpose of the study was to investigate the real situation of pig production enterprises in Kyerwa District, Tanzania, with the aim of implementing a comprehensive family farm. The study was conducted in two wards of Kyerwa District: Kyerwa and Nyaruzumbura. The study population was comprised of people who are keeping pigs in six villages found in the Kyerwa and Nyaruzumbura Wards in the Kyerwa District: Kyerwa, Nshunga, Kagenyi, Mkiyonza, Milambi and Nyaruzumbura. From these villages, a total number of 42 participants were randomly selected: 36 were pig keepers and six were pig buyers. According to the findings, most of the people in Kyerwa District are keeping pigs on a small scale using local methods characterized by poor feeding methods such as roughages and home left overs and poor management methods which lead to poor growth of animals and cause animals to reach maturity at late ages. In addition, an experiment was conducted which involved two treatments with two different diets where by the first diet included maize, concentrates, fishmeal and tuberous and the second included tuberous, concentrates and fishmeal. The animals of treatment one reached the maximum weight gain rate at the age of 156.8 days with the daily weight gain rate of 0.527 kg/day while those of treatment two reached it at 151.3 days with the daily weight gain rate of 0.498 kg/day.
