Ítem Restringido Development of an organo-mineral fertilizer for maize and evaluation of its effect on soil pH and fertilit.(Universidad EARTH, 2021-12) Paul, Winie Sharsana; Sambani, Duplicate; Reis, Cristiano E. Rodrigues; Gillen Brenes, Luis E.Soil is a living organism that requires sustainable management to keep it healthy and improve its physicochemical and biological properties. Faced with increasing food needs in the world, the use of fertilizers has been implemented in agricultural production systems to increase the availability of nutrients in the soil to facilitate the absorption of macronutrients and micronutrients by plants. However, excessive application of inorganic fertilizers can result in disruption of soil structures, increases in acidity, toxicity problems, and unavailability of organic matter which affect both soil health and crop yields. Considering the need to find sustainable alternatives to maintain nutrient reserves, some alternative fertilizers that are both low-cost and renewable are needed to sustain the global food chain. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to develop an organo-mineral fertilizer and an organic amendment in order to evaluate their effects on soil pH, soil fertility and maize (Zea mays) growth, and to compare it to a synthetic fertilizer. Three treatments (T1: Organo-mineral); (T2: poultry manure and eggshell); (T3: NPK 10:30:10), at different doses (5 g, 10 g, 15 g), and control (TC) were used in this study. Organo-mineral fertilizer treatment showed better pellet firmness than the other treatments over time. The results showed Organo-mineral fertilizer and NPK as the treatments with the highest effectiveness on maize growth considering the parameters of plant height and cob weight. There was no significant difference between treatments with respect to the parameters of number of leaves and root depth. Poultry Manure and Eggshell was the only treatment with the ability to increase soil pH over time. In this sense, our results indicate that the use of the organo-mineral fertilizer developed in this work may provide similar growth performance of maize similarly to those obtained by the commercial fertilizer.
