dc.description.abstractUna de las grandes alternativas viables para aumentar la seguridad alimentaria en nuestro planeta es el árbol Artocarpus altilis (fruta de pan). Su adaptabilidad a cambios de temperatura, permite que se pueda desarrollar en zonas con temperaturas que oscilan entre los 15 °C y los 40 °C. Debido a su amplia tolerancia y al alto valor nutritivo de sus frutos, resulta ideal para considerarse como especie promisoria que haga frente a los embates del Cambio Climático. Sin embargo, aún con la importancia que tiene, existe muy poca información sobre él y el manejo que se debe tomar para así potenciar, de una manera sostenible, su producción. En el presente estudio, se describe el comportamiento del crecimiento de árboles de A. altilis que fueron plantados en el año 2014 y en ocho lotes diferentes en la Universidad EARTH, Limón, Costa Rica. Durante los años 2015, 2016 y 2018, se realizaron toma de datos de crecimiento en los diferentes diseños de plantación, donde se aplicaron diferentes manejos: convencional y orgánico. Así mismo, se describe el primer registro de la producción de cosecha de A. altilis por árbol por lote de plantación. Como resultados, se encontró que los árboles de A. altilis, presentan un mejor desarrollo cuando se asocian con cultivos de porte bajo, ya que tienen una mejor exposición a la radiación solar. En cuanto al ancho de la copa se halló que los árboles bajo un sistema convencional, tuvieron un mejor desarrollo. Finalmente, al evaluar el número de ramas en todos los lotes con similar control y manejo, se evidencio que no existen diferencias significativas entre el número de ramas presentes en cada árbol por lote.es_ES
dc.description.abstractOne of the great feasible alternatives to increase food security in our planet is the tree Artocarpus altilis (bread fruit). Its adaptability to temperature changes is because it can be grow in areas with temperatures ranging from 15 °C to 40 °C. And due to its high nutritional value of its fruits, it is ideal to be considered as a promising species that faces the onslaught of climate change. However, even with the importance it has, there is very little information known about it and the management that must be taken in order to promote, in a sustainable way, its production. In the present study, the behavior of the growth of trees of A. altilis was described that were planted in the year 2014 within eight different farm spots at the EARTH University, Limón, Costa Rica. During the years 2015, 2016 and 2018, growth data were taken in the different plantation designs, where different managements were applied: conventional and organic system. In the same way, the first record of the harvest production of A. altilis per tree per plantation spot is described. As a result, it was found that A. altilis trees present a better growth when associated with low-bearing crops, as they have better exposure to solar radiation. As for the width of the cup it was found that the trees under a conventional system had a better growth. Finally, when evaluating the number of branches in all those eight different farm spots with similar control and management, it is evidence that there are no significant differences between the numbers of branches present in each tree per spot.es_ES
