The use of protected environments in agriculture has been adopted as the main method to mitigate the effect of climate change that have manifested strongly in recent years. Agricultural production using greenhouses provides favorable conditions for plant development, in addition to minimizing damage from pests and diseases present abroad. The research and application of new technologies allows innovation in this area and the transfer of information to small and large farmers. The present study allows a better interpretation of the technical factors that must be taken into account for the implementation of greenhouses for the germination and development of tomato seedlings, also provides a characterization of the tomato sector in the district of South Piedades, San Ramón from the production approach in the value chain. Within the study, important technical factors were considered, including the evaluation of three substrate treatments and their effectiveness for the germination and development of tomato seedlings in two structures located in Piedades Sur, San Ramón and on the University campus EARTH, Guácimo. From which it was obtained that commercial treatment based on sphagnum peat (T3) showed the best germination results and necessary technical characteristics.
