The high growth of the world population requires prepared agricultural systems to meet the food demand. Therefore, in many places due to the lack of water sources, it is still not possible to cover the necessary food production. This has boosted the development of efficient water management systems, such as automated irrigation systems. In the present study an automated irrigation system was described. This system was built based on the Arduino programming and automation platform, where analog signals were evaluated, integrated and processed. The necessary materials and equipment were used, such as a relay, solenoid valve, water pump and soil moisture sensors. Subsequently, two elevated beds were designed, built, and planted with a type of forest tree, named Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa). The irrigation system was installed on one bed, while manual irrigation was implemented in the other bed. These two beds helped to compare the following characteristics in the Cocobolo plants: (a) water consumption, (b) number of seedlings, (c) height, (d) number of leaves, and (e) percentage of germination. The obtained results have helped to make two main observations:(1) In terms of water consumption and number of plants grown there was a significant difference (p<0.05). This difference means (a) a growth of 129 seedlings in the automated system more than the manual irrigation system, and (b) water savings equivalent to 300 L from the automated system compared to manual irrigation. Thus, the automated irrigation system has presented a greater growth and lower water consumption. (2) there were no significant differences between the heights of the plants and number of leaves (p<0.05). This means that the height and number of leaves of the plants were similar in both treatments (automated and manual). The average height for the plants was 7cm and the average number of leaves was 10 leaves seedling. Finally, the results indicated that the automated irrigation system performed better than the manual system, having lower water consumption and higher contribution to plant growth.
