In this study, a methodology was evaluated for the investigation of vegetation indexes as the green leaf index (GLI) and the derived vegetal cover from images acquired from mobile phones for the prediction of productive variables of the pasture Panicum maximum cv Tanzania-1. The variables, luminous interception, vegetation cover, canopy height, biomass, dry matter and leaf area index were evaluated using the coefficients of determination (R2), correlation (r) and mean square error (RMSE), in order to know the feasibility of this method for the modeling of the variables under study. The studied GLI generated ranges of values between -0.117 to 0.142, for the productive phase of 31 days of vegetative growth of the crop. These data were obtained in five surveys with intervals of 7 days. This data collection was carriedout in field protocols within the experimental units. Regarding the results, a moderately high data correlation was obtained when comparing the GLI with the leaf area index (R2 = 0.63). For biomass, the correlation analysis with the GLI also had a moderately high correlation (R2 = 0.61, RMSE = 153.46 g/m2). For the regression equations of predictive models, highs regression coefficient were obtained. For the estimation of coverage, the regression coefficient was R2> 0.7 with an RMSE = 0.73 m2/m2. In the case of coverage, R2 = 0.77 and RMSE = 151.53 g/m2 were obtained, observing that no differences were found between the mean squared error of estimation for each variable. The predictive equations elaborated for the vegetal cover, and derived with the Canopeo app data, were of R2 = 0.89, 0.77 and 0.67 for the index of leaf area, biomass and height of the canopy, respectively. Therefore, the method that allowed the best accuracy in the estimation was the light sensor of the mobile phone. These results suggest that leaf area index and biomass are feasible variables for research implementation.
