The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the tolerance of five kinds of grass of the genus Urochloa (Syn. Brachiaria) [U. arrecta (Tanner), U. arrecta x U. mutica (Brachipara), U. brizantha cv. Marandu, U. hybrid cv. Cayman and U. humidicola cv. Llanero] under different conditions of humidity in the soil: (i) water deficit (20 % humidity retention), (ii) field capacity (33 % humidity retention), and (iii) flood (2 cm water sheet above ground level). The experimental design was completely random factorial, with five genotypes, three humidity conditions and three repetitions. Six-liter pots were used. The aerial biomass of the deficit or flood conditions presented lower values concerning field capacity, 32.46 % and 46.65 %, respectively. The Brachipara and Llanero genotypes showed no reduction in aerial biomass in all three conditions, indicating tolerance. Greater root area was verified for the plants subject to water deficit (144 %) followed by flooding (32.65 %). The root volume was higher in water deficit conditions (206.07 %), followed by flooding (81.57 %). The rate of foliar appearance and the number of living leaves showed low values of flooding in relation to the other water conditions, with the Tanner genotype obtaining the highest average. The rate of foliar elongation and the length of the leaf blade showed lower values in flood condition compared to the other water conditions, with the Marandu genotype presenting the highest averages. It can be concluded that the Brachipara and Tanner genotypes are more tolerant to the water and flood deficit due to their rates of foliar appearance and stem elongation as well as their biomass production, which was affected on a smaller scale compared to the other genotypes.
