Ítem Restringido Evaluating basic infrastructure, agricultural practices, and markets to assist the reviving of the Somali banana industry.(Universidad EARTH, 2019-12) Abdirahman, Yusuf Yasin; Wünscher, TobiasThe reestablishment of the Somali banana industry will require modern agricultural practices, establishment of basic infrastructure like packing house centers and markets. It will be presented models of agricultural practices and basic infrastructure used in some selected Costa Rican commercial plantations. Regarding the markets, the market demand, Iran, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and UAE varied over. The overall demand of import per capita in Europe increased 29 % from 2012 to 2018. In Turkey, the import quantity decreased and the consumption per capital decreased 33.85% from 2012 to 2018. The UAE import was increasing along with an increase per capita of 358% from 2012 to 2018. And finally, Saudi Arabia with 33% decreased its net import per capita. In Costa Rica, the basic infrastructure that was found includes the use of Cable wire for fruit transport and use of Moving trays of similar usage. Plastic bag for fruit protection, fruit calibrator for measuring fruit thickness and colored tape for fruit age control were common in all three plantations. The use of padded shoulder support (cuna) for bunch carrying from the plant to the cable wire is common in EARTH plantation and SIGLO XXI while Varcli Pinares S.A uses moving trays for transport fruit with the objective to significantly reduce fruit mechanical damage during transport. The total fruit lost registered during 2018 of EARTH corresponded an average of 15.6%, Varcli Pinares 1.13%, and average fruit loss of 2,56 % for SIGLO XXI. The water consumption is 4 L/ box of 18 kg with no washing piles and that de-handing is done in the field using a moving tray (camillas in movimiento). The packing houses of SIGLO XXI and EARTH presented water consumption of 5.31 L/ box and 171 L/ box. The yield per hectare of Varcli Pinares S.A was 67 boxes of 18.14 kg with 49 bunches per hectare per week, while earth and SIGLOXXI respectively presented 45 boxes and 59 boxes of 18 kg per hectare per week with EARTH 45 bunches per hectare/week and Varcli Pinares S.A producing 53 bunches per hectare per week.
